Leadership and Stakeholder Forum

African Universities Driving Local Development: Visibility, Advocacy, Impact

May 6-7, 2026

Safari Park Hotel & Casino, Nairobi (Kenya)

The IMPACT HE Leadership and Stakeholder Forum is a high-level policy and dialogue event bringing together university leaders, policymakers and international partners to discuss how African universities can strengthen their role as drivers of local development.

The Forum will explore how higher education institutions can enhance their visibility, advocacy and impact, while strengthening international partnerships and cooperation across Africa and Europe.

Organised as part of the Erasmus+ Capacity Building project IMPACT HE, the event will create a strategic space for dialogue between African, European and international stakeholders working to maximise the contribution of higher education cooperation to local and regional development.

Key themes of the Forum

The Forum will address a number of strategic themes related to the role of higher education institutions in development and international cooperation, such as:

Strengthening African ownership

of higher education cooperation initiatives

Promoting balanced and mutually beneficial cooperation models

between African and European institutions

Strengthening coordination among international partners and funding mechanisms

including Team Europe approaches

Enhancing institutional capacity

of African universities to lead international partnerships

Improving the communication of universities’ impact

as drivers of local development

Participants

Reflecting the nature of the IMPACT HE project, a collaboration of EU and African universities with universities associations, ministries of education and EU funding agencies, the Forum will bring together university leadership from Kenya, Ethiopia and further afield in Africa, as well as representatives of national and regional policy bodies, foundations, international organisations, and higher education and research networks.

Contributing to the Study and Research in Africa (SRiA) initiative

The IMPACT HE Leadership and Stakeholder Forum will take place alongside stakeholder consultations for Study and Research in Africa (SRiA), a new EU initiative under the Global Gateway Youth Mobility Flagship.

SRiA aims to strengthen Africa’s global visibility as a study and research destination by supporting the development of an interactive information portal, strengthening internationalisation capacities in African higher education institutions, improving data and information systems on mobility opportunities, and reinforcing links with African innovation ecosystems.

By aligning with the SRiA consultation process, the Forum will also contribute to broader discussions on Africa–Europe cooperation in higher education, research and innovation.
